Georgios Karaiskakis was born into a family of Greek militia leaders (armatoloi) serving the Ottoman Empire.

Growing up amidst armed bands (klephts), he developed a keen sense of leadership and a deep-seated desire for Greek independence. At the age of 15, he was captured by Ali Pasha of Yanina, who recognized his potential and appointed him commander of a bodyguard unit.
